Giles County High ~ Zero Tolerance, Smoking, Dipping, Chewing, Vaping, Alcohol, Drugs
Zero Tolerance Offenses
Certain actions within a school setting will not be tolerated. Zero tolerance offenses will result in expulsion of the student. The expulsion may be for one calendar year from the date of the offense. In such a case, the student does have the right to due process. If a student is expelled for a zero tolerance offense, he/she may appeal in writing to the director of schools. Zero tolerance offenses may include, but not limited to drugs, assault on a faculty/staff member, firearms and other dangerous weapons.
Smoking/Dipping/Chewing/Vaping
The surgeon general suggests that smoking may be hazardous to your health. Furthermore, it is against the law for anyone under the age of 18 to use or possess tobacco products. Giles County High School does not condone smoking or the use of tobacco in any form. E-cigarettes will be treated in the same manner or regular cigarettes. Students found using tobacco products or in the possession of such items will be disciplined and receive a citation for violation of youth tobacco free act.
Alcohol
Student will not possess, distribute or be under the influence of alcoholic beverages in school buildings, on school grounds, in school vehicles or buses, or at any school sponsored activity at any time, whether on or off school grounds. Upon information that a student is suspected of violating this policy, the principal of the school shall be notified immediately. If it is determined that board policy has been violated, the principal shall notify the student’s parent or guardian and the appropriate law enforcement officials. Alcohol cases are subject to zero tolerance disciplinary actions.
Drugs
Students will not possess, distribute or be under the influence of illegal drugs in school buildings, on school grounds, in school vehicles or buses, or at any school sponsored activity at any time, whether or not on or off school grounds. Students will not market or distribute any substance which is represented to be or is substantially similar in color, shape, size, or markings to a controlled substance in school buildings or at any school-sponsored activity at any time, whether on or off school grounds.
Upon information that a student is suspected of violating this policy, the principal of the school shall be notified immediately. If it is determined that board policy has been violated, the principal shall notify the student’s parent/guardian and the appropriate law enforcement officials. All drug cases are subject to zero tolerance disciplinary action.
